BRITTANY HARRIS / KEEP AN OPEN MIND

"The only thing I needed when I was emancipating from the system was feeling as if I was wanted."

Brittany Harris shares #HerStory:

"Being so young in the foster care system was the most defining and challenging experience for me. I was there from 3 until 5. In that time frame, I was with two different families. The first family sexually abused my brother (we were placed together). The second family was very nice, they really tried to make sure we felt comfortable at their house. It was hard not knowing what was going to happen to us.

The foster care system taught me that there are good families and there are bad families. I was lucky to only spend 2 years in the system. I also learned to give my children more love than I got growing up.

Some advice- keep an open mind. 80% of the time the foster family is trying to help you. I know it can be hard feeling unwanted and lonely. Give it time and things will get better. If the foster family isn’t treating you right speak up.”
